Sout Africa won the toss and put England in to bat. Wet conditions the previous day must have made the South Africans believe that their bowlers might get some movement. They didn't.
England after a good start did stutter a little after lunch, but Pieterson and Bell with support from Broad gave England a massive first innings total of 595.
Bell missed out on a doublecentury cruelly falling on 199. South Africa replied with 247 and were made to follow on.
Better resistance saw South Africa batting for over two days on a pitch offering nothing to the bowlers.
Smith, McKenzie and Amla all scored centuries in what turned out to be a bore draw.
South Africa mustbe ruing the decision to put England in to bat ... althoug the Lord's pitch is so benign nowadays that a draw is always a good bet.
