Welcome to the first Gibraltar Blog. It's a snapshot of my day as I wander around Gibraltar promoting and developing the website. I don't think it will usually be on the front page but during the first month or two of the website launching it may be useful to have it in a more prominent position ... we'll see.
We start the day with a coffee in Latinos, before Jane (my wife) starts work and I go for a wander around Gibraltar, I turn off Main Street and find ... a lovely church.
The Church of Scotland.
A small plaza and a bust of Queen Victoria on a pillar.
A young Victoria. Erected by the people of Gibraltar.
Not the 39 steps ...
The gate from the other side.
I headed towards the Alameda Botanical Gardens. Passing the Queen's Cinema on the way. Mamma Mia the movie is showing. Shows start at 9pm.
In the gardens it was beautifully cool. No sunshine, so not so good for high contrast photography. I decided to photograph shady foliage plants. Here are a few photographs. I sat in a deep shaded part of the gardens surrounded by running water cascading through a series of pools. I wrote the blog on the laptop and processed the photographs. The plan is to find a bar with wireless internet and upload my work at lunchtime. Hopefully topping up the battery. This will mean I can keep everything up to date and have less to do when I get home :-)
Quite close to the Alameda is the fire station. Manxman wrote about it in the forums the other day. I'd never really looked up at the facade before. It is quite a lovely example of 'Deco' period architecture.
The next job was to sort out the mobile phone with a new Gibraltar SIM card.
It turns out that the phone needs 'unlocking' before it'll work on a new network. Unlocking the mobile will cost £15 but means leaving the phone and hoping it'll be ready before we leave this afternoon.
We were planning to go to Ronda tomorrow to get some business cards printed. We need to know the Gibraltar mobile number is working to put it on the cards.
I walk down towards the port area. Walking along the front. A brave young lad swam passed me.
It was still misty up on the rock. The sun was trying but failing to break through. As it climbs and moves towards the west, the day should improve.
The Swimming Baths. Some pensioners were swimming in the harbour. It looks a little industrial for swimming. However mussels were growing on the rocks, usually a sign pollution levels aren't too high.
I bought lunch in Morrisons and headed up to Main Street to meet Jane.
We had coffee in the Gibraltar Arms.
Jane went back to work. She's got an early finish.
I went to sort out some polo shirts and t-shirts with our website name printed on them.
They aren't too pricey.
I also found a guillotine for cutting up flyers to hand around.
Here are a few shots of Main Street, the sun was finally coming out.
I went to the Lord Nelson to use their wireless network to write this and upload the photos.
Jane's going to collect the phone then we'll meet in Casemates Square.
This is the Lord Nelson. The sun was out and lots of people were enjoying beers and bar meals.
A few shots of Casemates Square and some more of Main Street.
The levanter cloud was still forming on the rock. It was 16:00h
Mission accomplished. We met in Casemates Sqare and decided to have a cold drink. We walked through the Waterport gates and found a cool haven in Fresh bar.
Good service, nice people, cool beer and WiFi too.
Not a great day for photography, but a good day nonetheless, because we got everything done which we set out to do.
