Gibraltar Football

20 May 2008, 23:13

Group Match - Tuesday 20th May 2008:
VENUE: LLANELIAN ROAD, COLWYN BAY FC, KO: 7.00pm

England 1-0 Gibraltar

England Team: Adam Bartlett, Chris McPhee, John Brayford, Michael Morrison, Kevin Nicholson, Ben Harding, Lewis Chalmers, Russell Penn, Andy Burgess, Mitchell Cole, Steve Morison.

Gibraltar Team: Jordan Perez, Brendon Perez, Roy Chipolina, Matthew Reoch, Adolf Anes, Daniel Duarte, Aaron Asquez, Jeremy Lopez, Lee Casciaro, Robert Gulling, Al Green.

Attendance: 150 (approx)

Gibraltar goalkeeper Jordan Perez was the hero of the day as Gibraltar bravely confined  England to a narrow 1-0 victory in the opening game.

A spirited team performance and brilliant goalkeeping
that was later likened to that of Poland's Jan Tomaszewski in the Wembley World Cup Qualifier of 1973 by England manager Paul Fairclough, but Perez had no answer to Cole's first half strike as the Stevenage Borough forward broke through the Gibraltar defence and executed a delightful lob.

England created chance after chance but they just couldn't find a way through to increase their advantage.

After an hours play and some stoic defending Gibraltar started to play more attacking football and at times threatened to score a shock equaliser.

England manager Paul Fairclough complimented Gibraltar on their perfomance saying
"This would have been a big game for them, but they were very euphoric, spirited and defended very well.

"For the first hour or so they had nine men behind the ball, but they suddenly threw caution to the wind and started attacking us and they caused a few problems too.

"If they are as energised in their other games as they were against us, they could certainly cause an upset."

Charlton defeated a committed Gibraltar XI 5-0 as Alan Pardew's men continued their preparations for the 2008/09 campaign out in Jerez, Spain last night.

Thomas was somewhat fortunate in opening the scoring, wen after 21 minutes the Gibraltar goalkeeper misjudged his dangerous cross and it ended up in the net. The winger claimed his second from the penalty spot eight minutes later.

Stuart Fleetwood also claimed his first goal in Addicks colours since his summer recruitment.

Charlton Athletic will play a friendly against a Gibraltar national XI on Thursday in what looks likely to be the only competitive fixture during the Addicks' training camp in Spain.

Alan Pardew's men arrived in Jerez, near Cadiz, on Monday for eight days of training but saw discussions to play an Iranian national XI and Rochdale, who are also on tour in the area, not come to fruition.

However, the game with Gibraltar has been finalised and the majority of the Addicks squad are likely to feature, including new boys Stuart Fleetwood and Mark Hudson.

Youngsters such as Scott Wagstaff, Jonjo Shelvey, Josh Wright, Grant Basey and Rashid Yussuff are also likely to play some part as they look to impress Pardew ahead of the forthcoming Championship campaign.

Alan Pardew and Phil Parkinson will be running the rule over the Addicks against a Gibraltar national XI on Thursday One player missing will be Matt Holland. The midfielder, who signed a new one-year deal with the Addicks recently, did not travel with the squad to Spain after picking up a slight ankle knock in the pre-season friendly at Braintree Town on Saturday.

Charlton assistant boss Phil Parkinson said: "We have a game on Thursday against Gibraltar which should be a good match."

"That's going to be our only game out here so we'll start training a little bit later on Thursday as we prepare for the match early in the evening. "

"Al in all it has been a good first few days here. The new boys are settling in well and everyone is working really hard."

Parkinson went on to say: "Because of the heat you have to be careful you don't do too much but we've got no injuries to report of, although obviously Matt Holland isn't here after picking up a knock in the pre-season game at Braintree."

"Our head physiotherapist Steve Allen felt he would get better staying in England than coming out here and not being able to train. But if anyone can get back quickly after injury then it's Matty."

Scotland came from behind twice to secure victory over Gibraltar in the final game of the Four Nations Semi Professional tournament.

Both teams started brightly, with Gibraltar keen to push men forward on every occasion. Their tactics paid off when Scotland forward Kris Niddrie conceded a 36th minute penalty, with Gibraltar no.19 Brian Perez slotting home to open the scoring.

Scotland created several good chances as they pushed for the equaliser before half time, hitting the bar twice. . Scotland were also denied by Gibraltar goalkeeper Keiron Macedo, who pulled off three world class saves to keep Gibraltar in front at the break.
