Is the final chapter of the New Flame saga about to be written?
The ‘New Flame’ collided with the tanker, ‘Torm Gertrud’, in the Bay of Gibraltar on August 12 2007.
The cargo of scrap metal has been removed by 'Big Foot' and boats from Titan Salvage.
According to a Spanish Environmental group Ecologistas en Acción the scrap metal was transported to Lisbon on the freighters 'Holstentor' and 'Musketier'.
The environmental group are concerned that there is a large difference in the weight of metal believed to have been on the New Flame and that arriving in Lisbon.
They are also calling for metallurgy and toxin tests to be done on the metal arriving in Portugal and a ban on it entering Spain from Portugal.
They are also calling on the EU to monitor the waters around the New Flame for pollution as it is salvaged.
The New Flame is now lying in three pieces on the sea bed in the Bay of Gibraltar just off Europa Point.
Ecologistas en Acción have also released a report that 53% of Spaniards breathe polluted air. This is estimated to cause 16,000 deaths a year.
Which is around 16,000 more than the New Flame has caused ...
The group also indicate that Spain will exceed the quotas established in 2001 to be achieved by 2010 for nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 37.5% and in volatile organic compounds (VOC) by 33.9%.
