The Commissioner of Police Luis Wink has spoken about the incident near the Market Tavern Waterport/Casemates Gates, Casemates Square on Saturday evening.
Officers of the RGP were forced to draw batons on a crowd of around eighty youths who were attempting to prevent the arrest of an individual.
Commissioner Wink said his officers felt threatened and the order was given to draw batons and a warning given. No blows were struck. A 22-year old man was arrested This arrest is what triggered off the angry crowd, although most were only watching out of curiosity. Later three others were arrested for public order offences they were aged 25, 22 and 17.
One was arrested for violent behaviour, another for obstructing police and the other for violent behaviour and obstructing police.
Over last weekend, there were 25 arrests in total. With warm summer nights ahead, a souring of the relationship between the RGP and local young people isn't a good sign.

The GHA’s Pathology Department has now received all the results of the 3,500 blood tests collected in Gibraltar. Laboratories in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US have been engaged in analysing the tests within the time window identified by Julian’s Medical Team at Great Ormond Street. Unfortunately, after further testing, none of the potential donors have compatibility for the bone marrow transplant required by Julian.
