Heikki Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen took his first Grand Prix race win in unexpected circumstances at the tediously boring Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton started on pole position with team-mate Kovalainen in second spot on the dirty side of the circuit.

But it was Philip Massa who started from third place on the grid who bravely overtook both McLarens to take an unexpected lead.

The Hungaroring has one racing line and no real straights. If you move off the racing line to attempt a pass you pick up so much dirt on your tyres that you slow down therefore passing on the track is close to impossible. Only if it rains does this grand prix have any great entertainment value.

The only place to overtake is in the pits. So team strategy is vital.
It looked as if Hamilton in second might have been fueled for four or five more laps than Massa for the final stop. Unfortunately we weree not to find out as Hamilton's tyre punctured on lap 41 and he dropped from second to eleventh.

Massa was heading for an easy victory when his Ferrari's engine blew three laps from the flag.

Handing Kovalainen an unexpected first grand prix win.
Hamilton finished fifth. His title hopes not too badly effected and he still leads the Championship.

The next Grand Prix is in Valencia on August 24th 2008.

Lewis HamiltonCongratulations to Lewis Hamilton on becoming Formula One World Champion 2008.

At the penultimate corner, Hamilton passed Glock to claim fifth place - and with it the title.

The drama started before the race when a very heavy shower delayed the race and teams switched to intermediate (wet) tyres.

Hamilton kept out of trouble and was settling for the 4/5th spot he needed to win the title.

But rain intervened again in the final laps.
leading to an amazing last lap drama.

Lewis HamiltonAfter a rollercoaster season of F1 races, steward's enquiries, appeals and a few crazy moments. The F1 Driver's Championship  comes to the final race today at Interlagos in Brazil.

The grid positions were decided yesterday and it wasn't a good qualifying session for Hamilton.

His only rival for the championship Philipe Massa was on pole position. Hamilton finished fourth.
He has both Ferraris in front of him and more worryingly his nemesis Fernando Alonso behind him.

luca_cordero_di_montezemolo ferrariFerrari president Luca di Montezemolo is keen for the FIA to change the rules regarding team orders in Formula One.

In the Austrian Grand Prix in 2002 Rubens Barrichello blatantly moved aside for Michael Schumacher, earning jeers from the crowd and worldwide condemnation.

Team orders were banned by the FIA after a world-wide outcry.

Lewis HamiltonLewis Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix. Leading all the way in a boring yet tense race.

Boring because the front four on the grid finished in the first four positions.
Tense because the track was covered in marbles from the tyres, and Hamilton's team-mate Heikki Kovalainen had a puncture which could have happened to any of the drivers at any time.

Other than a first lap duel between Alonso and Kovalainen there was little overtaking.
No pit lane incidents.
No dodgy decisions by stewards.

Raikkonen and Massa swapped positions towards the end of the race to ensure Massa got an extra two points.

Fernando AlonsoFernando Alonso won the Japanese Grand Prix. After driving a perfect race to follow up on his win in Singapore.

A poor start by Lewis Hamilton from pole position saw him try to regain the lead by braking late into the first corner. He ran wide taking Raikonnen with him.
He rejoined the race behind title rival Massa who he overtook but Massa after leaving te track ran into amilton making Hamilton spin and putting im last
Hamilton flat spotted his tyres and had to pit.
