Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visit Slovakia
Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh made their first ever state visit to Slovakia after being invited by Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic.
The Queen and Prince were accompanied by David Miliband, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.
The visit will focus on the subjects of partnership, social inclusion and environmental issues, plus trade, investments, tourism, culture, education and science during their state visit.
In the country's capital Bratislava the Queen met 99-year-old Sir Nicholas Winton, who helped save hundreds of Jews from the Nazis before World War II broke out in 1939.
In 1938, stockbroker Winton cancelled a skiing holiday to Switzerland and chose to go to Czechoslovakia instead.
He bravely rescued 669 Czech children from their doomed fate in the Nazi death camps, but his achievement went unrecognised for more than half a century. For fifty years most of the children did not know to whom they owed their lives.
The story of Nicholas Winton only emerged when his wife Greta came across an old leather briefcase in an attic and found lists of the children and letters from their parents. He hadn't even told her of his role during the war.
On Friday 24th Ocxtober 2008 Queen Elizabeth rode on a funicular (cable railway) from Stary Smokovec to the mountain station of Hrebienok where she met the "people of the Tatras" - skiers dressed in historic costumes, foresters, mountain guides and rescuers.
The Queen then unveiled a memorial plaque and opened a wheelchair-accessible tourist pathway.
While Queen Elizabeth watched traditional folklore dancing and singing in the nearby town of Spisska Sobota, the Duke of Edinburgh visited a green tourist resort powered by geothermal and solar energy in the northern city of Poprad.
More than 4,000 spectators then watched as Queen Elizabeth symbolically dropped the puck between Aquacity Poprad and Guildford Flames ice-hockey players in Poprad before leaving for London.
