Workers are cataloging the remains of people shot by Franco's fascist troops between 1936-1951.
The Chief archaeologist for the project is Sebastián Fernández, he has reported that a large number of children’s bodies have been found, thought to be the offspring of republicans who died from epidemics or a lack of nutrition. A fifth of the bodies found are women, and most of them were carrying a medal with a picture of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron of Málaga.
There are calls for DNA analysis to take place but this would need government funding.
It is thought that a monument will be constructed on the site with the names of the victims.
80 volunteers will continue with the work over the summer.
