
Prince Kardam of Bulgaria and his wife Doña Miriam Ungria y López were injured in a car crash near Madrid.
The incident occurred at 3 pm CET at 42 km on the N-1 highway towards Madrid.
The prince's car, a Jaguar, went off the road due to unknown reasons, hit a tree and overturned.
Prince Kardam was taken by helicopter to the Doce de Octubre Hospital, while his wife was taken to the La Paz Hospital.
The prince is reported to have a serious brain injury and both of his hands are so severely injured that amputation may be needed.
His wife has a broken elbow and bruises, but her condition is not serious.
BackgroundPrince Kardam of Bulgaria, Prince of Turnovo (born December 2, 1962), is eldest son of tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria and his wife Doña Margarita Gomez-Acebo y Cejuela, however he was born after the loss of the throne.
As such, he is by courtesy also sometimes styled as if being a crown prince.
He is known also as Kardam of Bulgaria and Kardam of Turnovo, the latter being the title of the heir apparent of the Bulgarian throne.
He was born in Madrid and has a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics from Penn State University.
