  • All group winners qualify.
  • The eight best runners-up advance to 'Round Two', where they will be paired in four ties from which the winners will qualify.

    The following criteria are applied to determine the standings:

  • a) Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches.
  • b) Goal difference in all group matches.
  • c) Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

    If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:

  • d) Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned.
  • e) Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned.
  • f) Greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned.
  • g) Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

    NB In the six-team groups, all results against the bottom-placed team will be discounted for the above.

Belarus 1-3 England World Cup Qualifier

Wayne Rooney scored twice as England beat Belarus to make it maximum points from four games.

Steven Gerrard gave England the lead from 30 yards after 11 minutes, but Pavel Sitko headed a deserved leveller for Belarus before the break.

Rooney turned in a cross from Emile Heskey five minutes after the break.

And he lifted home a superb third from Gerrard's pass 16 minutes from time to give coach Fabio Capello another win.

England 5-1 Kazakhstan World Cup Qualifier
England football soccer crest World CupEngland beat Kazakhstan by five goals to one in the first world cup qualifier ever played at the new Wembley stadium.

The score flattered England who were poor. Capello started with a strange lopsided 4-3-3 formation. Upson replaced Terry at the back. The first half was terrible. I lost count of the number of passes that went astray from usually reliable players like Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney. Only Walcott looked good on the right.
